| Yesterday, my four sons were part of a black history program at church. Their great, great, great, great grandfather, Corporal Rufus Vann who was one of the first black soldiers to fight in the Civil War. Corporal Vann was part of the Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry who fought valiantly. One of the battles took place at Island Mound in Bates County Butler, Missouri which was designated a Missouri State Park in 2012.
